Synopsis

Russian society is often depicted as either passive-content with the strong leadership of President Putin-or nationalist and supportive of new Cold War policies. But how and when do Russian citizens collectively pursue shared goals or solutions to common problems?

Contributors to Varieties of Russian Activism challenge conventional wisdom by focusing on social actions-taken directly or indirectly through education, information generation, or engagement-that contest the Kremlin's version of political reality. While the Kremlin and its elite supporters almost always prevail over social forces, existing activism proves that Russian citizens are not passive. Rather, Russians repeatedly question state policy, redress everyday problems, and demand new services. Together, these essays interrogate what kinds of practices can be defined as activism in a fast-changing, politically volatile society.

An engaging collection, Varieties of Russian Activism reveals how policy processes, potential allies, state structures and actors, and non-governmental organizations shape mobilization across issues and locations throughout Russia.
