The need for competency based education (CBE) has been recognized for years. The preparation of graduates, for a wide range of professions and trades, has been a concern of employers. The essential issue is that education and work are disconnected. New graduates did not have the basic skills to function. Competency based education (CBE) provides a way to help assure that learners are competent at the end of educational endeavors. This book is designed as a resource for nurses and health professionals, in all disciplines, who are responsible for diverse education programs. The book brings together all the elements of CBE and provides a road map to develop, implement, and evaluate competency based approaches to education. The authors outline the processes essential to implementing a CBE program, while detailing why CBE is needed and how it can help revise current education programs. Readers will learn how to develop apply the CBE program by implementing new models, organization strategies, revised care delivery approaches, project planning tools, and more. Key topics include: applying a model to develop & implement a competency based education program/course; transitioning to the CBE approach; developing valid and reliable assessments; and, data collection and use to verify achievement of outcomes.
