Synopsis

Das vorliegende Werk richtet sich an Personen, die in der biomedizinischen Forschung tatig sind und mit dem Schwein als Modelltier arbeiten oder dies planen zu tun. Da die eingehende internistische Untersuchung das Ruckgrat der klinischen Evaluation einer (experimentellen) therapeutischen Intervention darstellt, wird dieser ein besonderer Stellenwert eingeraumt. Ebenso werden Spezialuntersuchungsgange, wie der neurologische und der dermatologische Untersuchungsgang, mit den schweinespezifischen Besonderheiten besprochen. Daneben werden die wichtigsten invasiven Massnahmen, unterschiedliche Narkoseschemata und das perioperative Monitoring vorgestellt. Ein weiterer Fokus des Buches liegt auf der klinischen Immunologie. Ausserdem werden die wichtigsten tierschutzrechtlichen Bestimmungen in Bezug auf die Haltung und den Einsatz von Schweinen in Tierversuchen diskutiert. Jeder Tierhalter sollte ausserdem die jeweiligen (anzeigepflichtigen) seuchenhaften Erkrankungen und Zoonosen der betreffenden Tierart (er)kennen. Deshalb werden die markanten klinischen und pathologischen Bilder der Seuchen des Schweines besprochen. Da aufgrund des 3R-Prinzips Tierversuche in zunehmendem Masse hinterfragt werden, wird der Einsatz von Schweinemodellen in der biomedizinischen Forschung anhand ausgewahlter Beispiele kritisch beleuchtet, wobei der Autor aus einer Fulle eigener Arbeiten und Erfahrungen schoepfen kann.
