This symposium report contains selected contributions presented at the First Liquid Oxygen (LOX) Workshop, which focused on long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) for patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Aspects discussed include indications for and benefits from LTOT, exercise-limiting factors in respiratory distress, muscle energetics and ultrastructure in chronic hypoxia, as well as the effect of LTOT on exercise capacity and prognosis. The papers are followed by a discussion and critical analysis of the effects of LTOT due to portable liquid oxygen tanks in disabled exercise-limited and "malnourished" COPD patients with borderline hypoxemia. Highlighting progress in a treatment modality which might improve symptoms, the quality of life and survival of severely handicapped patients, this collection of papers should be beneficial to all specialists in the field of respiratory diseases.
