Synopsis

The power of colour to transform surroundings, to evoke reactions, to touch the imagination, to exhilarate, excite and inspire is unmatched. It is the colours of the landscape, the quality of the light, the climate and the natural materials at hand for building and decorating that give voice to the colours of country style. In Country Colour, interiors expert Judith Miller explores the rich seam of colour as it is used in country homes around the world: the faded pinks, reddish-brown terracotta, yellow ochre and burnt sienna found in the rolling hills of the Tuscan landscape are reflected in the colourful decoration of a stone villa nestled in the countryside; in Sweden the decoration of a traditional farmhouse boasts the bracing, chilly colours -pale blue, grey, crisp white and pale yellow- evocative of northern climates. Judith explores colour throughout the book by navigating its use in various palettes, including sections on cool, warm and vibrant colours that explain the different perceptions of colour from one climate region to another.

Whether cool and pale or bright and warm, colour plays a pivotal role in bringing a cosy and comfortable mood to the rooms of an interior decorated in country style, celebrating the charms of rural living while creating a welcome retreat. Each chapter includes carefully selected swatches for paint and fabric with codes that allow you to match available paints from manufacturers such as Benjamin Moore, Fired Earth, Ralph Lauren and Farrow & Ball. Coming from one of the industry's leading experts, this book makes a beautifully illustrated and highly authoritative companion for anyone hoping to inject a bit of country colour into their home.

Judith Miller is a regular TV presenter and best-selling author of over 80 books on antiques and interiors. She started collecting antiques in the late 1960s while studying at Edinburgh University: fascinated by inexpensive plates bought in the city's junk shops, she researched their past in books and auction catalogues and at antiques fairs and shops. Her knowledge of antiques grew, and in 1979 she co-founded Miller's Antiques Price Guide. She went on to publish numerous acclaimed titles, including Miller's Antiques Encyclopedia, The Style Sourcebook, Influential Styles, Judith Miller Colour and the best-selling DK Homes & Antiques and Collectables Price Guide. A regular contributor to newspapers and magazines, including BBC Homes & Antiques, she is also co-presenter of The House Detectives (BBC2), consultant and co-presenter of The Antiques Trail and presenter of It's Your Bid. She lives in London and New York.
