Secrets of a Shaman (Paperback)

Pre-order for despatch on publication.

Jorge Araoz (whose shaman's name is Hachumak) is a Peruvian curandero (or healer), who runs a small lodge on the banks of the Peruvian Amazon where he cultivates Ayahuasca vines (an ancient Amazonian hallucinogenic brew) and other sacred plants, and rescues endangered jungle animals, including monkeys, alligators, tapirs and poisonous snakes.

The time is right for a book on shamanism written by an authoritative, articulate shaman. Anyone with an interest in spirituality, wellness, shamanism, ancient healing, ayahuasca, or the Amazonian culture will be mesmerized by this book. David Carroll, an experienced author and journalist, will help tell Hachumak's story with vivid detail and insight, as he has gone through the healing ceremony himself.

The authors provide examples of shamanic teachings, the reality of spiritual visions, the beliefs guiding his ceremonies, and their healing effects, all framed through Jorge's own fascinating life story.

Jorge Hachumak is a Peruvian of Spanish descent who began his healing career as a practitioner of Chinese Qi gong in old Lima's China Town. After a successful career in tai chi competition, he worked with elderly peasants in Northern Peru. During this time, he was taken under the wing of native shamans, witches and herbalists who spent years teaching him the ancient healings. Today he runs a compound fronting the banks of the Amazon River, a three hour boat ride up river from the nearest city, located in a heavily jungled area well off the electric and telecommunications grid. Here he cultivates medicinal plants, rescues hurt jungle animals, practices Ayahuasca ceremonies with small groups, and performs traditional one-on-one healing sessions. When not working with visitors at his center, he travels widely in Europe and the United States giving lectures, doing hands-on healing, and working with people interested in learning about the shamanic arts. Until today, Jorge has kept his shamanic activities low-profile and discrete. Due to requests from many of the people he has worked with, he has decided to speak out on the subject, both to explain the true art and ritual of shamanism, and to counter aspects of Ayahuasca tourism that is destroying vast swatches of the Peruvian rainforest and many vital elements of Peruvian culture along with it. David L. Carroll received his B.A. Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University and worked for an M.A. in archaeology at Columbia University. He has written nine network TV programs including a series of one-man shows for PBS and the EMMY Award winning adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front for the Hallmark Hall of Fame. Mr. Carroll has written 40 published books, a majority of which deal with health, self-help, and spirituality. His Five Stages of the Soul has sold more than 40,000 copies and been translated into eight languages. Spiritual Parenting has gone through four printings. Living with Dying is in its fifth edition.
