Synopsis

Duncan Black Macdonald, a leading scholar of Islamic theology, published a number of works in this field during the early decades of the twentieth century. Many of his writings are still of considerable value to studens of Islamic theology and his works continue to be reprinted. In this present volume the author explores the development of the Muslim religion, law and constitution. The work is intended both to bring the general reader to a closer understanding of Islamic development, and to provide the student with a general work of reference in which to find a coherent and soundly based study of the subject. In his introduction the author also avows another, higher, aim: Only when the people of the world reach a better understanding of one another, he says, 'will the future cause of civilization be secure. To aid some little in the understanding of Islam among us is the object of this book'.
