Since the last edition there have been a number of important policy developments of relevance including - a national childcare strategy - a white paper on early education - a national children's strategy - a strategy for play - the establishment of the Office of Ombudsman for Children - the establishment of the Centre for Early Childhood Development and Education - a discussion document on a curriculum for early childhood

The text is written for students taking certificates, diplomas and degrees in early childhood education and NCVA courses in childcare, and for those taking courses in education, applied social studies, psychology and related fields.

Addresses early education theories which have been updated by contemporary understanding of how young children learn. It also takes account of such issues as diversity, equality and inclusion.

Provides practical examples with suggested applications of theory to achieve best practice and positive learning outcomes for children.

Facilitates student learning in an accessible way through review questions at the end of each chapter.
