After finishing her dissertation at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, Dr. Marion Keim chose South Africa as her home in 1990 to be the first teacher of a multicultural classroom at the German School in Cape Town when it opened its doors to black students. In 1998 she received the Community Development Award from the University of the Western Cape for the program she initiated for integrating marginalized groups in disadvantaged communities in the Western Cape. Her community work continues to target children and youth, women, street children and teachers. In 1999 she received the Metropolitan Life Award for community involvement in Southern Africa for her in-service training program for physical education teachers from disadvantaged areas. She is a senior lecturer at the Institute for Social Development of the University of the Western cape.
