Synopsis

Le traite de Paris, qui clot la guerre de Sept Ans (1756-1763), confirme la preponderance acquise pa la Grande-Bretagne sur met et dans les colonies. Depuis le dix-neuvieme siecle, la tradition historiographique concluait en l'indifference de l'opinion francaise face a ce bouleversement des rapports de force. Ce livre s'attache a corriger ce jugement et montre que l'emergence de la puissance britannique a produit une mutation fondamentale de la culture politique de la France d'Ancien Regime.



Tandis que se succedent les victoires brittaniques, s'affirme en France la renommee patriotique de l'ennemi. La force du sentiment national insulaire est regardee comme l'explication la plus satisfaisante de la montee en puissance de la Grande-Bretagne. Deja regardee comme un modele politique, social et culturel par la France des Lumieres, Albion

devient alors un modele de patriotisme digne d'emulation.



Ce modele suscite en France un reveil patriotique qui met en exergue la figure du citoyen devoue au bien public. Ce nouveau patriotisme se place en porte-a-faux avec les bases de la monarchie francaise. Au terme du conflit, dans sa tentative de reconquete de l'opinion, la propagande gouvernementale fait face a une sphere publique patriote difficilement malleable. Les Francais ont en effet cesse de se regarder comme de simples sujets du monarque pour devenir des citoyens moralement et ideologiquement majeurs.
