Synopsis

Abandoned tunnels, derelict stations, old trackbeds and much more; all are included in "Do Not Alight Here", an entertaining and informative book that guides the reader through London's many remaining disused Underground and main line railway structures. They can be viewed in a series of 12 guided walks and short tube and train journeys, devised and investigated by the author, each of which takes in a sample of these forgotten and fascinating remains, with most of the entries illustrated with recently taken colour photographs.

Customer Reviews

You may have been walking down a London street and passed a strange-shaped building with no obvious purpose. Or perhaps you were travelling on a tube and glimpsed a stretch of unexplained tiling or noticed the tunnel widen. This book will explain what you were seeing - perhaps an abandoned station entrance, platform, or similar. Most of the book suggests walking routes, but the bit I liked best was the chapter on what you can identify through the windows of a moving tube train. There are "ghost" stations down there! It's good that the book is handbag/pocket-sized because you really need to carry it with you at all times, so you don't miss a spotting opportunity. But if you're outside London, it's not going to be of so much interest.
