There were several mill bridges that altered the natural watercourses, then bridges became obvious places to site toll bars in the turnpike era. The various navigation schemes of the late 18th and 19th century caused a network of entirely new bridges to be constructed and the Victorian age saw the county in the forefront of new bridge technology. Leading designers, architects and industrialists of the day began employing ground breaking methods of construction. This book explores the demands made by modern traffic on the county's bridges and looks forward to the planned new crossings that will once more advance the history of Suffolk bridges.
