Synopsis

Marxism stands accused of economic determinism, reductionism and a silence on human experience. This book argues that these problems can be traced back to Marx's failure to write his planned book on wage-labour. Combined with subsequent ignorance of Marx's method, the result has been a one-sided Marxism. By considering the worker and his or her needs, the author demonstrates the one-sidedness of both concepts (such as the value of labour-power) and theoretical inferences drawn from "Capital". Rather than rejecting Marx, the book argues the centrality of his "political economy of the working class" and the process of struggle for going beyond capitalism.
