When Tony Blair and New Labour fought the General Election of 1997, the Tories were easy prey. The cry of "18 years' misrule" was deafening and "sleaze" all-pervading. The electorate took to Tony in a big way - here was a man who meant what he said and said what he meant. His reward was an overwhelming victory followed by another in 2001.
