Naïve Lewis meets knowledgeable Angela. To his surprise they are very quickly married. Several babies are born before Lewis begins to suspect that they are not all his children.

He goes to Ireland in pursuit of the father of some of his family and meets Bernadette, a woman who is desperate for a baby.

Sometime after he returns home Bernadette arrives on his doorstep. The baby she is expecting is going to be related to his family, although not his child.

Angela welcomes Bernadette into their home, where she lives until the lure of other men means that she leaves.
