Synopsis

Selected Proceedings of the International Conference on Diffuse Pollution IX; 9-12 August 2005, Johannesburg, South Africa. These proceedings comprise the selected proceedings of the IWA's 9th International Conference on Diffuse Pollution. Following a full peer review 23 papers were selected covering aspects of remediation, groundwater, agriculture, catchment management, urban management, rural management, catchment modelling, monitoring and analysis, reservoir management, pesticides and bioremediation.

These papers highlight the complexity surrounding the problems related to diffuse pollution. It is hoped that they will give an understanding that diffuse pollution takes place within the social, political, institutional and economic environments of a country and that these issues not only determine the location, extent and amount of diffuse source pollution, they also influence how these sources of pollution can be managed as well as the viability of management approaches, procedures and practices. It is in this report that these proceedings will challenge the traditional scientist to broaden their perception of the technical issues surrounding diffuse pollution and to expand the search for understanding and solutions to include ideas from disciplines well outside the traditional circle of colleagues.
