Synopsis
Set during two summers in the mid-60s, HULA is narrated by the younger of two sisters. Their backyard is their universe and their prison, a place where they perform ritualistic childhood games but also witness in their peripheral vision the brutal interjections of the adult world. Their father, a Vietnam veteran, moves in and out of terrifying bouts of madness, whilst their mother sinks further and further into despondency. But through the child's eye-view we see a knowingness and resilience which is integral to the girls' survival.
