Synopsis

Yes, I did work in Algeria at a place called Hessi Messound in the Sahara desert. I was driving around in a Land Rover wearing a pair of shorts, floppy hat and a T-shirt inspecting pipelines, which could be anywhere from two hundred yards to twenty miles away from the office. Then I was offered the job in Canada. The difference in temperature was staggering. It caught us Englishmen out as we were just not used to it. I told my Canadian workmate, "I am not stopping here." "Why?" he asked. "It's too bloody cold." He replied, "Wait till the winter comes." "You're joking now!" But no, he was dead serious and he was right. But I really enjoyed my time in Canada; it's a great place and the people are the best I have met. I now live in Barrow-in-Furness, safe and sound. (I was never attacked by wolves.) The most excitement I get today is playing bridge.
