This is the first novel by the prize-winning poet, Fred D'Aguiar, and has been awarded the 1994 David Higham Prize, and also the 1994 Whitbread First Novel category. Set on a Virginian plantation in the 19th century and it tells the tragic story of a rebellious, fiercely intelligent young slave.
