33 1/3 Britpop Panel: Alex Niven & Jane Savidge with Anna Doble
To mark the summer of Oasis and Pulp, Foyles is delighted to partner with music imprint 33 1/3 for a night of Britpop chat and album analysis with music critic Alex Niven and Britpop insider Jane Savidge, chaired by writer and journalist Anna Doble.
Alex Niven and Jane Savidge are both authors of titles in the 33 1/3 series, contributions to the discourse on the nineties that have proved to be essential reading for detailed track-by-track analysis and insight into an era of music history. Alex Niven’s Definitely Maybe unravels Oasis’ iconic debut and Jane Savidge’s This is Hardcore examines Pulp’s 1998 masterpiece.
Alex Niven is a writer from the north-east of England. He writes regularly for the Guardian, Tribune and New Statesman, and has also contributed to publications including the New York Times, the Independent, Pitchfork, The Face and VICE. As well as Folk Opposition, he is the author of New Model Island, a critically acclaimed memoir of Englishness and regional identity, and most recently, The North Will Rise Again: In Search of the Future in Northern Heartlands. Currently Lecturer in English Literature at Newcastle University, he helped to start the radical publisher Repeater Books in 2014.
Jane Savidge is co-founder and head of legendary PR company Savage & Best, and is widely credited as being one of the main instigators of the Britpop movement that swept the UK in the mid 1990s. During this time, Jane and her company represented Suede, Pulp, The Verve, Elastica, Longpigs, whilst representing many other artists of the era including the Cranberries, The Fall and Jesus and Mary Chain. She is the author of Lunch With The Wild Frontiers and Here They Come With Their Make Up On: Suede, Coming Up and More Adventures Beyond The Wild Frontiers.
Anna Doble is a writer, broadcaster and digital journalist. She is the author of Connection is a Song: Coming Up and Coming Out Through the Music of the ’90s.
