Come eat! Radical publishers Tilted Axis Press invite you to join writer Thuận and TAP’s own Trà My Hickin for a discussion on creative translation, decolonising language, and a deep dive into poetry from South East Asia, accompanied by snacks.
Thuận was born in 1967 in Hanoi. She is the author of ten novels and a recipient of the Writers’ Union Prize, the highest award in Vietnamese literature. Chinatown, her debut novel in English, was the first work in the Vietnamese language to win an ALTA National Translation Award and a PEN Translates Award (2023), is the Runner-Up for TA First Translation Prize 2023, and was shortlisted for the 2023 Republic of Consciousness Prize. She has won awards for her translations of Houellebecq, Sartre, Modiano, Doan Bui and others into Vietnamese.
Trà My Hickin works at the intersection of the arts and community well-being as a publisher, archivist and community organiser. She uses storytelling and applies narrative approaches to social justice and community-building projects. She is the Marketing & Publicity Manager at Tilted Axis Books, a member of the Steering Committee of the An Việt Archives, is a trustee for South East & East Asian Women's Association and Kanlungan Filipino Consortium.
