From a master of realism, composed with propulsive detail, Flesh follows István through the isolation of his formative years, a clandestine teenage relationship with a married woman, then through the army and on to the company of London’s super-rich. Dissecting the competing impulses for love, intimacy, status and wealth, Flesh is Szalay’s finest novel yet about the driving forces at the heart of life.

David Szalay is the author of five previous works of fiction: Spring, The Innocent, London and the South-East, for which he was awarded the Betty Trask and Geoffrey Faber Memorial prizes, All That Man Is, for which he was awarded the Gordon Burn prize and Plimpton Prize for Fiction, and shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, and Turbulence, which won the Edge Hill Prize. Born in Canada, he grew up in London, and now lives in Vienna. His work has been translated into over twenty languages.

Szalay will be in conversation with journalist and writer Rachel Cooke. Cooke writes regularly for the Observer and New Statesman. She is also the author of Her Brilliant Career and Kitchen Person.

The event will be followed by an audience Q&A and book signing. Your ticket includes a complimentary glass of wine.
