On Migration: Sally Hayden, Nicola Kelly & Horatio Clare
Three acclaimed voices on migration come together at Foyles to discuss their on-the-ground reporting and the humanitarian toll of conflict and the asylum system.
Sally Hayden is an author and journalist covering migration, conflict and humanitarian crises. Her first book, My Fourth Time, We Drowned: Seeking Refuge on the World's Deadliest Migration Route, documents abuses happening on Europe's borders, particularly on the Central Mediterranean route from Libya to Italy. It won the 2022 Orwell Prize for Political Writing; An Post Irish Book of the Year; the Inge Feltrinelli Prize; the Michel Déon Prize; Il Premio Terzani; and was shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize for Nonfiction, among others. She is currently working as a correspondent for the Irish Times in Beirut.
Nicola Kelly is an award-winning investigative journalist focused on UK immigration and asylum. She is the author of Anywhere But Here: How Britain’s Broken Asylum System Fails Us All. Before moving into journalism, she worked as a diplomat for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, with postings in Brussels and Istanbul. Later, she moved to the Home Office, working in their press office, before leaving the civil service during the rollout of the hostile environment policy. Her reporting has been referenced in several legal challenges against Conservative Home Secretaries, as well as submissions and human rights reports.
Horatio Clare is the author of We Came By Sea, Stories of a greater Britain, a story of the often unrecognised volunteers who help thousands of refugees in Calais, and of the lifeboat crews mounting one of the great search and rescue operations of all time. Previously his work has included the memoirs Running for the Hills and Truant and the travel books A Single Swallow, Down to the Sea in Ships, Orison for a Curlew, Icebreaker and The Light in the Dark. His books for children include Aubrey and the Terrible Yoot. Clare’s essays and reviews appear on BBC radio and in the Financial Times, the Observer and the Spectator, among other publications. He lives with his family in West Yorkshire.
Sally Hayden will act as chair for this event, leading the discussion about the three authors' works.
The event will be followed by an audience Q&A. Your ticket includes a complimentary glass of wine.
