Reviews: Alcohol Explained (2)
“A different motivation”
(Paperback)
by Toby Whiting
Imagine stopping drinking because you wanted to, not because you 'should'. That's what this book did for me. I am posting a review to give dome balance, the one star reviewer complains that some things aren't factually accurate. I agree that Porter should have referenced his sources. However, so much of what's in the book is validated by my own experiences that if still packs a huge punch. Its writing style is odd, repetitive. But perhaps that's an advantage if your target audience is alcoholics! In summary its a really different exploration of what alcohol does and some useful tips to convert you into a non-drinker (if that's what you want)
“Full of half-truhts; redundant; only little valuable information”
(Paperback)
by T TC
In the book you can find many mistakes and half-truths, because I don't want be too long, let's look at thee examples: - "If we were drinking purely for taste we could quite easily substitute our drink with a nonalcoholic version." Alcohol-free beer / alcohilic beer - someone drinks it only because of alcohol amount, not the taste. Alcohol-free beer should be the same taste, only without alcohol. - "Beverages containing alcohol are drunk cold because people want do suppress taste/smell of ethanol, so it's the best to drink it as cold as possible." Wine connoisseurs around the world know, that to savor a particular wine, you have to drink it at proper temperature - for example white wine in general 9-12 °C, 7 °C or 14 °C wouldn't taste the best. - "What burns is poisonous, harming". Garlic, horseradish, pepper, ginger ... are objectively considered as healthy. And disinfection usually also burns, but helps. There are surely some truths - for example, that alcohol addiction is not healthy, from both physical and psychical side. But to know that you don't need to buy this book. It was waste of my money purchasing it. Sorry, Mr. Porter. Nice try.
