Reviews: Annelies (1)
“Disappointing & cliched”
(Paperback)
by sarai
Although this book seems to be well researched by David Gillham from a historical angle it failed to grab me or enthrall me. I am afraid I found it to be a bit hackneyed and, (in some places), in rather poor taste. It is very brave to take on such an iconic and famous character as Anne Frank but I feel that 'Annelies' is not successful in adding anything appealing or useful to her story. I really liked the actual idea of the book but upon reading it I found it to be very unrewarding and it was a bit of a struggle to get through to be honest. At the very least the author does not know what it is like to be a teenage girl especially one in Holland in the 1940's. He has turned Anne into a cliche. We sadly do not know how Anne would have grown up and what kind of woman she would have become and this book has really proved to me that her iconic and tragic story should be left as it is, it needs no embellishment. In the end I found the whole book a bit odd and creepy, so my suggestion would be to read Anne's diary instead.
