Reviews: Bad Monkeys (3)
“Bad Monkeys”
(Paperback)
Most original book I've read in a long time. Keeps you guessing as to what's really going on right to the end. Surreal, humorous, dark and disturbing in parts, this is an intelligently written and entertaining novel. Brilliant!
“American Psycho Through the Looking Glass”
(Paperback)
When I first picked it up, I mistook this book for a lightweight, Robert Rankin-esque, alternative reality novel. While a lot of it is utterly bonkers and, at times, darkly hilarious, it is also a rather clever yarn about the forging of a sociopath. Or is it?
Highly recommended for fans of “American Psycho,” “American Gods” and “Alice in Wonderland” alike, this jumbo bag of nuts is my favourite find of the year so far.
“Ook!”
(Paperback)
'Bad Monkeys' by Matt Ruff is the strangest book I've picked up in quite a while... It's the story of Jane Charlotte, a woman with a serious attitude problem, who is arrested for murder and tells the police that she works for a secret organisation; in particular, the execution squad. The problem with her story is that none of it checks out... names, dates, addresses... the only fact present is that there is a dead man whom she is clearly responsible for.
This, Matt Ruff's first novel, is a wonderful combination of thriller and sci-fi in a totally original way and the narrative speeds along like a blockbuster movie (if you can imagine 'The Matrix' injected with Red Bull, you're half-way there). It is full of twists, turns and it is devilishly clever... this one will keep you glued to every word.
