Reviews: Bad Turn (3)
“One Bad Turn Deserves Another!”
(Hardback)
It takes a very clever writer to take a recurring series character like Charlie Fox and, in this her 13th outing, keep her as fresh as she was way back in her first, Killer Instinct. So in ‘Bad Turn’, Zoe Sharp has done what many others don’t even try to do and created another new world for Charlie, way outside her previous comfort zone in close protection, having quit her job, lost her home and, it would appear, out of pretty much all options except cat-sitting for friends. Regular readers of the series will of course know that there is probably a lot more to this than meets the eye; new readers need not be concerned if they haven’t yet read previous instalments (although you will want to, and quickly, afterwards), as each book in the series can comfortably be read as a standalone.
So, ‘Bad Turn’. Fast forward past the reasons that find Charlie cat-sitting, and let’s dive in and find her out driving on a country road in New Jersey (as you do)… she encounters a violent attack which leaves blood on the road and a foiled kidnap attempt; we see kick-ass Charlie at her best, no legal weapons can help her this time so, doing what she does best, she still goes on the attack and uses that ferocious experience from her time in war zones to improvise a rescue that ultimately results in being appointed bodyguard to the potential kidnap victim. Fast and furious actions are always hallmarks of a Charlie Fox adventure and this is the first of many highlights in ‘Bad Turn’; action which moves from New Jersey to Italy and then to a climax France. Full product description is available to read above and I urge you to do so, but once again Zoe Sharp has produced a sure-fire winner and a classic addition to the Charlie Fox series. Long may they both flourish!
With thanks to the author and the publisher for providing an Advance Reading Copy of this title.
“Brilliant”
(Paperback)
This thriller sees Charlie's whole life turned upside down which leads to her returning to Europe as close protection for an arms dealers wife. When things go wrong Charlie is literally fighting to stay alive. Heart racing action scenes galore!
“A stonking read!”
(Paperback)
I was lucky enough to receive an Advanced Reader Copy of Bad Turn and oh my goodness, I can honestly say it is the best book I have read this year! I was compelled to keep reading, I could not put it down. Luckily for my family and friends, I was only antisocial for a day and a half, because that's how quickly I blazed through it.
I have been reading the Charlie Fox series for a while now and this is by far my favourite. The pace is relentless and the characters engaging and entertaining. If you haven't read any of the other books, Sharp's clever writing means this is not a problem and you can easily dive in at this point. Similarly, if you have been reading the series for a while you won't feel you're being told things you already know, thanks in part to Charlie being completely out of her normal sphere of expertise in this instance.
It is a brilliant book, excellently plotted, very well-written and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
