Coming from the writer of the Fargo TV series and author of 'The Good Father' I knew I would be in for a great read with 'Before the Fall'. Opening with a plane crash that happens within a few pages, you are instantly gripped. I lost whole Sunday afternoon to this compelling book, not that I'm complaining! The time line switches between the period after the crash and the days leading up to it. I was kept in a state of suspense throughout the whole book, you don't have a clue how the plane crashed until the very last chapters and I was so pleased that I couldn't work out what had happened. There is also a very chilling theme running through the story, the invasive and unethical lengths some media outlets will go to to get a story and keep up viewer/reader numbers. When you think that these things happen everyday, it really does send a little chill down the spine. This was a superb read that I enjoyed immensely, un-put-downable and riveting.

I decided to listen to the audio of Before the Fall whilst painting my kitchen and it proved a brilliant distraction. This story of eleven souls aboard a private charter plane when it crashes into the ocean is completely attention grabbing. The structure is terrific. We learn of the crash, the events that happen directly following and the details of the lives lived by the eleven people pre-crash. We, as readers, have touching insight into the backgrounds of everyone involved as we stitch together, piece by piece, the reason behind the crash. It's a story rich with drama, twists and revelations. I loved the philosophical outlook provided by Scott, our hero. He's a man's man who is well grounded while dealing with the shock of the crash and its aftermath. The complete opposite of Bill Cunningham, whom readers will have their own opinions about. Brilliant stuff. Thank you Mr. Hawley for a very enjoyable, thought provoking read. I am anxious to read your next novel.

One of the most interesting and captivating thrillers that I have read. A variety of story arcs twist around each other, layers of mystery and intrigue. Why did the plane crash, who were the people on the plane and what motivated their lives and ultimately their deaths. Excellent work from a very talented author.

On a first glance, this seems to be your typical mystery: why did this specific plane, with these specific passangers fall? However, as you progress, you realise that what's striking about the book is how it focus on human nature, especially when it concerns the mediatism of an accident - how people exploit the pain and suffering of others - and what will one do when faced with adversity. An unique book that had me on edge all the way through the end.
