Reviews: Bi (4)
“Thought-provoking and informative”

Really interesting read. Was inspired on reading this to explore my own bisexuality further. It's clear that Dr Shaw has done a lot of research and felt like I was always learning about the long and (often fraught) history of bi+ issues. In a world where biphobia and bi-erasure still exist, this is an important work to counter that. The author's own experiences help tell the story and sections of it are sad (particularly about persecution of bi+ individuals) but it is also warm hearted and inspiring in places. Overall an important work in the history of bisexuality.
“Very interesting and informative read”

I struggle with non-fiction books but I greatly enjoyed Dr Shaw's exploration of the history and culture of the bisexual community. Her writing made academic papers and studies easy to understand and her analysis is very insightful. I would recommend to anyone looking to reacquaint themselves with their community's history or looking to know more about wider sexuality history that seems woefully under researched or, at the very least, is under written about.
“Truly a Bi-ble!”

Bi is a provocative and lens-widening account of what is means to be bisexual and to live bisexually. Each chapter covers a different aspect of bisexual history and experience; the decades-old debate of bisexuality as a ‘choice’, how we can define bisexuality, and how bisexuality looks in the modern day. It covers everything from the everyday socio-politics of identity to global movements that strain for equality for bisexual people. I read the whole thing in just a few days, and found myself chuckling at Dr Shaw’s natural humorous tone as much as I did cringing at the sadder topics discussed.

It has a lot of history and science that helps to understand bisexuality better. I have met a few people who identify as bisexual but never really discussed this so it was interesting to know more about it. The only downside for me was the author's experiences thrown here and there which made me lose focus of what I was reading, I would have preferred those as essays, but that's my preference.
