Reviews: Bonehead (2)
“Shocking and gripping”
(Hardback)
Mo Hayder was one of my favourite authors and I would highly recommend each and every one of her novels. Bonehead covers some really disturbing subject matter but manages to do it in a way that is evocative but not gratuitous - sometimes suggestion is more than enough. I thought this was a shocking and gripping story, eerie with its hints of the supernatural. I really enjoyed it.
“Brilliantly horrifying read”
(Hardback)
There could be no more fitting tribute to the writer than this, her final book. A deeply dark thriller that kept me awake at night reading, with brilliant twists and turns right through to the last page. Alex Mullins is a survivor of a school coach crash where only 7 kids survived. She has made a life and is now a PC based in Stroud, Gloucestershire. But she is still haunted by a vision from the crash of Bonehead, a skeletal woman said to be a portent of bad luck. Well written with a great plot and perfectly executed characters this was a fantastic read with some stomach-churning moments.
Briefly, Maryam is the mother of Aaron, another survivor of the crash. One day her dog goes missing and searching the local woods brings some shocks. Alex is determined to get to the bottom of it all and enlists the help of Aaron. However when her own dog also goes missing the drama deepens.
Told from the POV’s of Alex and Maryam this book had some of the best red herrings I’ve read. Perfect to keep the reader guessing and in my case guessing wrong… more than once! So trust nothing and nobody! It’s such a shame that Alex has only the one outing but definitely wow what a storyline. A riveting dark and horrifying story with a chilling conclusion. I read it in one sitting. Wonderful.
