Once again, Patrick Ness has pulled it out of the bag with his new YA novel: diverse characters, a racing storyline and the perfect element of dragons. He's created a world that is believable and wonderous and I never ever get tired of his books.

Excellent mix of characters, well constructed plot and thought provoking loops about prophecies. A real page turner and quite unpredictable.

So to start, I finished this in only a couple days, I couldn't put it down (except when I had to because life). I loved it, as a fan of Patrick Ness, chaos walking trilogy being one of my favourites, I went into this with high expectations and was not disappointed! Except perhaps for the fact I wish it was longer! It was a short read for sure but I enjoyed it nonetheless. And without spoilers, the way it ended leaves me hoping a sequel could be on the cards one day, fingers crossed. A lot of reviews stated the ended felt rushed. I didn't feel that personally, yes it was fast paced, but not in a way that made me feel he was just rushing to finish. It was totally gripping. Long story short, I loved it and if you love dragons, cults and prophecies, and Patrick Ness you probably will too.

I will read and love every Patrick Ness novel 'til the day I die and I am still convinced that my ghost would pre-order from beyond the grave. Only he could write about an impending war in a version of 1950s America (only with dragons) and somehow make it an intimate tale of love, loss and one person making a large difference. Sarah already doesn't have the easiest life. She lost her mother to cancer, her family's farm is struggling and she's a mixed-race girl living in rural 1050s America. In an attempt to save some money, Sarah's dad hires a dragon to do some heavy-duty farm work and things only spiral from there. Human-dragon tensions are rising. American-Russian tensions are rising. An assassin is on his way. And some detectives are following not far behind. If you love complex lore, unique characters and writing that oozes creativity from conception to execution then look no further. The book has dragons - do I need to say more?
