While away your afternoon creating a delightful patchwork quilt, sewing on buttons and attracting some quite beautiful cats to come and sleep on it in this 2 to 4 player game with some tricky decisions late game that will force you to hold your nerve, searching for that just the right piece to finish your beautiful quilt. In Calico, players take turns placing sections of their quilts on to their player boards. Each game players will pick different scoring titles to place within the boards which at the end of the game will score depending on the pattern and colour of the tiles that surrounding them. On your turn simply place the tile and then draft a new one from the three face up. As your quilt grows groups of the same pattern fabric will attract cats worth extra points at the end of the game, while groups of three or more of the same colour will allow you to add a button of that colour also worth points at the end of the game. Later in the game, you’ll have to make some tricky decisions around whether or not you’re willing to hold your nerve for that exact right piece for your scoring titles or to take the hit and attract that high point cat for a big group of the same pattern. The beauty of calico lies in this tight end game so some forward planning with what you are going to do will help you to score big at the end of the game. The game scales well from 2 to 4 players with a larger player counts playing completely differently to the two player game whilst still following the same rules. Me and my wife love this game and it’s the perfect thing to break out when family are round as it is a little bit sweet but has a real brain burner edge. Six different scoring titles mean your game is a slightly different every time and you can mix up the boards for even more variance. This is the first in a series of these tile laying games from this publisher so if you enjoy this, I heartily recommend you check out Cascadia. Calico still my favourite though, because who doesn’t like making quilts and hanging out with cats?
