Reviews: Cast No Shadow (1)
“outstanding crime fiction”
(Paperback)
The latest by Nick Quantrill and having read all his previous books, this for me is the best to date. Superbly slick, taut plotting combined with a compelling narrative. The book has that Noir feel to it, with a gritty undertone that gives the book an edgy feel
Whilst set in the present day, it’s roots are firmly fixed in an old cold case, for me this made the story more about having to root around in the past and some good old leg work, it’s very cleverly plotted and executed with aplomb on the page.
Yaz is a really well written and interesting character, there is a strongly independent side to her with a steely determination to seek out the truth whatever the cost, but you also feel a certain loneliness to her, she definetly has an interesting backstory. The book throughout is written with relateable characters, full of depth and having that sense of realism. As I have come to expect with Nick’s book location is key and almost a central character, you get a feeling for Hull, it’s geography and people.
I loved the way the story flowed in realtime, there is plenty of suspensfeul moments, and you can see a shift as the book progresses in some of the characters.
As a read it shows how you can never escape the consequences of the past, it also gets to the root of how people deal and cope with their actions and decisions. Guilt can come back to haunt, superbly character driven the book deals with human emotions and conflict
Towards the end of the book the drama and tension are ratcheted up, you have that element of doubt as to how the plot will play out.
Hopefully we haven’t seen the lat of Yaz,
As a read I found it both gripping and compelling, a well crafted read, with a richness and intensity to the storytelling
A book I would definetly recommend for any crime aficionado , I was hooked from the outset until the dramatic finale.
