Reviews: Catch Your Death (16)
“An incredible murder mystery!”
(Paperback)
Honestly this was amazing!
When I started the book I was a bit skeptical, as soon as I noticed it being told from multiple POVs I thought that there was definitely going to be at least one POV that I wasn't going to enjoy and was going to have to grudgingly read through. I quickly learned that this was defffffinitely not the case!
Devi, Jayne and Lizzie represent all the personalities that make the perfect murder mystery.
This was honestly incredible, I adored how fast paced it was, there was never any point where I was bored and wanted the story to hurry up and move along. Everything about this was perfect, if a book has secret passages involved I am instantly in LOVE.
The plot twists were perfect, I genuinely didn’t see them coming, I definitely had a few “omg what is happening” moments. I don’t want to say too much and spoil anything but I felt like I’d gotten totally engrossed in the book and then BAM plot twist, it was AMAZING.
I honestly wish I could read this again for the first time.
I need everyone to read this!!!
“YA mystery excellence”
(Paperback)
Catch Your Death is a scintillating, scheming marvel of a book. Between this and This Book Kills, Ravena Guron is quickly emerging as a shining star of YA mysteries. Do not miss out on this incredible book.
This is one of the best mysteries I have ever had the joy of reading. I was buddy reading this and audibly gasped, then went overboard texting my buddy. Everything is just kept at such brilliance: the pacing, plotting, tension, twists, atmosphere, characters and setting. It is a layered and complex puzzle, but one that is so satisfying to see come together. Guron juggles a lot but keeps the pages flowing nicely, allowing you to slip into the beguiling trance this story offers. It is such a love letter to classic mysteries, with tropes and stock settings – the cut off house in a snowstorm with a deadly dinner party full of people who hate each other. I adored how she played with these expectations, sometimes fulfilling them and sometimes challenging them in sharp, interesting ways. That classic set up is done to a tee, but she injects new life into it with ingenious shocks, surprises and secrets. This is something thoroughly modern and different. There is so much more than first meets the eye and you will love unpicking this tangled web alongside Devi, Lizzie and Jayne.
Speaking of these three, they are phenomenal protagonists. Each has their own distinctive narrative voice right from the off and I welcomed each into my heart instantly. Devi is headstrong, intelligent and fiercely driven. She made me cackle with her humour and willingness to play detective as soon as she could. Lizzie was slightly more reserved, but also kind and heartfelt. Her friendships and loyalty are core drives for her, particularly with her family. Jayne was even more mysterious to start with, deliberately trying to camouflage herself and fade into the background. Behind her steel wall though there is a kindness and warmth that is so generous and unrelenting. All three were three-dimensional and believable and I adored reading their arcs over the course of the book. They were all so warm and passionate, while also having keen eyes. My detective notebook was firmly in use, with all of the little clues and details. It was such a rich and well-layered plot to uncover, so I am sure Guron has more for me to discover upon a second read.
This is hands down one of the best Young Adult mysteries I have ever read. It is so immaculately plotted with a wonderful homage to the Golden Age of Crime that grows into so much more. The initial opening section is gripping, but also drip feeds you the slow burning background of information needed to piece this dastardly jigsaw piece together. Guron cannily switches from past sections to the current day police interviews, allowing narratives to merge together in unexpected and challenging ways. You are kept hooked, but also allow yourself to sit back and wonder at Guron’s brilliance. I cannot exaggerate how phenomenal this book is. The twists are next level. They genuinely catch you off guard and completely flip your perspective on everything, as good twists should do. They marry together so well with the creeping atmosphere of dread and paranoia settling in. You know from the start the outcome of this fateful encounter, but our characters do not in their past narratives. In this sense, the reader is placed in a false state of omnipotence, only for Guron to completely rip that facade away.
Catch Your Death is YA mystery excellence at its finest. Cosy up with a blanket and hot chocolate and allow Guron to take you on a wild, twisty and wonderful journey.

“what a book”
(Paperback)
this felt like a whirlwind, it was jam packed from start to finish. I’m not sure I’ve ever read a book with so much detail. At first it started quite slowly and I was worried that for such a long book it would be over done. But I was completely and utterly wrong.
it started with the basic story, or what we thought was the story, how the girls ended up at the house and of course the murder. Just when I thought I had it all figured out I was thrust back in time for more and more plot. See the thing is if I write too much then I’m going to spoil it, and a book like this deserves to be read and loved.
the characters were all pretty cool, they all had their own uniqueness to them. The character development was interesting to see, especially within the vanforte family.
the plot itself was well thought out and we’ll executed. You were completely guessing right up until the end. I wholeheartedly did not expect nearly any of what went down in this book
“Addictive and thrilling”
(Paperback)
The wealthy Emily Vanforte has called a dinner party at the Bramble estate for an important reason - one of the guests has a secret and she intends to out them. Attending are herself, her husband, her daughter, her nephew and her daughters boyfriend. She's purchased a fabulous new necklace for the occasion and Lizzie, the shop owners daughter, comes to deliver.
Unfortunately, due to a bad snowstorm, it's not safe for Lizzie to return home and Emily generously invites her to stay the night, along with Devi whose car has broken down nearby. Jayne, the housekeepers assistant, is asked to stay over also to look after the girls. They can't come to dinner, but she's happy for them to be hosted in the kitchen.
During dinner, however, Emily collapses and dies....a tragic circumstance? Or a murder? Trapped by the storm, Devi, Lizzie and Jayne decide to investigate...just in case they could be next....
The story is told from each of the girls POV, with transcripts from police interviews also. I found Devi quite arrogant so I didn't like her chapters as much as the others.
The story is addictive, I really really enjoyed it. There's a section for writing your own thoughts and what you think happened, I'll say I wasn't completely correct but I was on the right track!
This is the second book I've read from this author and my favourite so far. Will definitely be looking her up in future.
“From snowballing plot twists to whodunit predictions, the book took me on an action-packed journey.”
(Paperback)
Told in three POVs belonging to teenage girls Devi, Lizzie and Jayne, we meet Devi first, who is detailing her last movements to a detective who is piecing together the mysterious death of Emily Vanforte, a wealthy and influential woman, owner of the Bramble Estate. We’re with Devi as she’s travelling to her grandmother’s house during a snowstorm, ending up stranded at the Bramble Estate when her old car will no longer get started. Jayne has been working at the Bramble Estate for a few weeks, alongside the long-term caretaker. Lizzie was only supposed to be dropping off a piece of expensive jewellery to Emily Vanforte, and also gets stranded there during the snowstorm. Emily wills them to stay and wait out the snow for safety, whilst also maintaining how the dinner party she’s throwing for her family will unearth some long-buried truths…
But when Emily gets poisoned during the dinner, it’s clear a murderer is among them. But is it Emily’s cold and horrible husband? Emily’s daughter Lottie and boyfriend Douglas? Rogue family member Tate? Suddenly the houses rumours of being haunted aren’t so fictitious, whispers and bumps in the night becoming alarmingly true. But as we learn more about Devi, Jayne and Lizzie, getting snippets of Emily’s last movements and story behind the Vanforte’s history, a plot twist storms inward, throwing all guesses out in exchange for a shock turn no one will see coming.
Overall, Catch Your Death was quite literally one of the most intricately woven mysteries I’ve read in a long time. From snowballing plot twists to whodunit predictions, the book took me on an action-packed journey, painting an artful picture with a cleverly cunning edge. I loved Devi so much, she was absolutely my favourite of the three—whip-smart, dedicated and full of heart. I really loved the connection she had with Tate, and the beautiful friendship she found in Lizzie and Jayne (also, thank you Ravena for using Jayne-with-a-Y because that’s my middle name!) This was honestly up there with my favourite reads of the year. A huge must-read, and an easy five stars!
