Reviews: Chasing the Ghost (1)
“Decent”
(Paperback)
Bob Mayer is one of my favourite writers so I make no apologies for my high ratings. Due to the large amount of books he has done I'm going to do series reviews for sets of books and individual reviews for the single or shorter series. So... the various green beret series.
There are six books in the original green beret series, three in the Horace chase series and so far there are five in the will kane series.
Green Beret.
Dave Riley is the hero of this six book military thriller series. The stories are varied from taking down drug lords, protecting witnesses, biochemical warfare and genetic engineering using animals as soldiers. I liked this series. The writing as ever is excellent and Dave and his team are great characters. All of the books are good, with synbat and z standing out for me. Synbat is about genetic tampering to create animal soldiers. I know some reviews say its silly but I love a good creature feature and synbat is a very enjoyable creature feature indeed. Z is a another I enjoyed but frankly I liked all six books. A side note here. The book eternity base shares plotlines with another of Bob's books entitled the citadel. Both books were written under different pseudonyms so the shared plot would not noticed by causal readers as its unlikely they would have come across both books. Bob started reprinting his back catalogue some time ago now with all of the books coming out under his own name. Unfortunately the citadel has never been reprinted as he felt it would confuse readers due to the similarity with eternity base. It's a shame as citadel was very good. (A reprint with an explanatory note would be very welcome one day... hint, hint...)
The Horace chase series (chasing the ghost, chasing the lost, chasing the son)
The three Horace chase books act as sequels to the original green beret series. I liked the books but found the character of chase less engaging than others of Bob's. Dave Riley returns for books two and three and I enjoyed those books more than the first.
The will kane series.
This is Bob's latest series and I've done reviews of these books previously. The kane series is set in the late 1970's and are prequels to the original series. A young Dave Riley appears but not as a major character. The kane stories are very good but are pretty dark and brutal.
Overall I'd recommend the green beret books. They are good stories, packed full of action and great characters.
