I class this gem from Philip Pullman as a perfect tale: superbly constructed, with engaging characters and pace and tension that steadily ratchet up and hold you spellbound to the last. If you can get it, listen to Anton Lesser's mesmerising audio recording. It kept me from jobs I should have been doing - and that was without children around to use as an excuse! It is a little sinister for younger children, but those aged around 9 and up will love it!

A brilliant children's fairytale - equal parts scary to sweet, and should keep the parents enthralled at the same time.
