Reviews: Clown (3)
“Clown”
(Paperback)
by Forbes Browne
Set in a contemporary urban environment, a brave little toy clown becomes the saviour of his fellow discarded toys and benefactor to a poor family of three. Ok, so this book doesn't have any words but that's the beauty of it. It's like a silent movie where expressions and gestures alone tell the story. Quentin Blake's illustrations are typically vibrant and playful. This is what you get if you mix a bit of Charlie Chaplin with some watercolour paint and artfully splash it onto paper. A wonderful picture book that you can either narrate to younger children or leave them to narrate themselves.

Every once in a while, a book comes along that just makes you smile from ear to ear and you know you've come across a perfect gem. This story has no words, but the humourous illustrations that we've come to enjoy from Quentin Blake, speak a thousand words. You have to have this in your collection!
“A Wonderful Wordless Picture Book”
(Paperback)
by Jane Mac
The brilliance of this book is that it tells a very detailed story without any words. The clown is thrown into a dust bin with a heap of discarded toys. He is determined to survive and rescue the other toys. Along the way he is entered into a fancy dress competition and has a disagreement with a skinhead. Finally, he comes to the rescue of a little girl and her brother and they, in turn, rescue the toys. A wealth of wonderful detail on every page.
