Excellent, as are all Peter Mays books that I've read so far.

COFFIN ROAD By PETER MAY Isbn 978-1-78429-312-3 ‘The only name I am known by is that of a dead man. Since I have no past, I am without a present. And without a present I have no future.’ The thoughts of an amnesiac washed up, barely alive, on a Hebridean beach, with an ominous feeling of dread that he has committed a crime. Amnesia is a tricky base for a story but this writer deals with it with aplomb. Peter May has excelled in this outstandingly gripping thriller. The multi stranded story starts slowly tantalizing the reader with hints of a variety of mysterious plots leading into what is a complex story. This is a book that begins with promise and fulfills it one hundred percent. The characters are a fascinating mix of personalities keeping the reader in the dark almost until the denouement. From a man with no memory, new friends from the south, a teenage girl obsessed with her father’s suicide, a stranger lurking in the dunes with binoculars, and a rather feisty local lady, they contrast and connect with one another forming a trellis on which the plot grows. Peter May writes superb prose, tight and direct. His affectionate descriptions of the Hebrides, its weather and people convey the area so well one can visualize the white sands, the empty beaches, the dark islands and the wild abandon of the sea breaking on the rocks. It is an imaginative book where the reader feels that anything can happen. From the first page we know that this is going to be thrilling and exciting and any interruptions to the reading will be most unwelcome. I have only one criticism and it regards the scene in the shed between Karen and Billy. It broke the flow of the story slightly and I believe it served no purpose. The darkness of the book is created by the clever use of language without the use of graphic descriptions of violence. This is writing of the highest standard. Far from being a simple thriller it is soon apparent that much research went into the axis of the tale. The current concerns regarding agro chemicals and their effect on the environment are bang up to the minute and topical. The writer’s use of that subject leaves a disturbing question in my mind long after the exciting conclusion of what rates as possibly the best thriller I have ever read. Sheila A. Another first class read from Peter May based on what is now a familiar stamping ground for him the Outer Hebrides. As usual with one of his novels you can almost see, hear and just about taste the islands as he tells an intriguing story of murder and memory loss. I wont spoil it in any way but I recommend it and if you enjoy it a lot I also recommend a wee visit to the islands too they never disappoint.
