Reviews: Colditz (10)
“Great Book”
(Hardback)
Not so much an escape book, more about endurance, and the cold reality of being a POW, sheds a new light on how people behaved, recommended
“Superb history, escapology, psychology and just an overall fascinating book.”
(Hardback)
I loved this book.
This book is for me, the best that Macintyre has produced. The history of Colditz is thorough, always readable and detailed but never dull or academic. Along the way, the major characters are presented straightforwardly and fairly. This makes for a compelling read that joins up a lot of the post war myths about the prison.
The book also gets into the psychological details involved in being a prisoner and the way people act in these unique circumstances. The book also covers the details of the complexities of the law of armed conflict involving prisoners, surrender and security, something that many similar books do not cover.
The writing is typical Macintyre and is crisp, compelling and perfectly structured. A superbly enjoyable and fascinating book.

An enlightening and for once open missive about the real world not the fantasy tales we have been programmed with before. There is in fact nothing new in the book but telling it is all new. The best book on the topic so far. I also appreciated that the author told us about Douglas Bader the real man instead of the fictional one portrayed in the movies.
“Insightful and Fascinating!”

This is an absolutely brilliant book! As a History graduate and one as an academic background - I can really say that I really do not mind a book without anything else just pure, flowing texts - however, I have to highlight how much I appreciated the additional sources in the book. E.g. from the pictures, the geographical maps, and the maps of the castle, the photographs of various artefacts. It makes it so so rich, and exciting in a way. It also truly shows, and shines light on the incredibly in-depth research what went into this book.
