“A history that may be challenging for some made accessible for all”
(Hardback)
A truly excellent and skilled piece of writing, specifically regarding the people of the Crusades. This is an emphasis that Jones stresses in his title and his introduction, and I strongly agree with his aim to focus this period of history on those specifically affected. This is a book for the medievalist and non-medievalist alike, written in a fluid and easy-to-read way. I personally adored this approach of focusing on the people affected, and think this makes a history that may be challenging for some accessible for all. The book is not linguistically heavy with scholarship and academia. There is enough to support Jones' arguments, but not so much that it makes the book inaccessible to the average reader. Due to this emphasis on personal experience, the reader feels right in the midst of the wars as opposed to a passive observer. By linking the events in the crusades to the present, Jones illustrates the continued relevance of seemingly old history. I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed this book, and am very much looking forward to the next one. By far one of my most favourite books on this period from one of my most favourite historians.

“Brilliant”

Absolutely fantastic, full of loads of interesting information and reads well considering some of the complexity of the content, 100% worth a read if you are interested in that period
“Only read if interested.”
(Paperback)
I enjoy Dan jones. He is possibly the only historian that can write a book with such detail and passion. I have gave it a 5 star review.
However, I shall warn you, it is deep. And there’s a lot going on. You have to stay with it or you’ll get lost.
