Reviews: Cuckoo (24)
“Gripping story”
(Paperback)
A compelling book that has you hooked from the very first page.. I read faster and faster to find out what would happen, but didn't want it to end. A "must read" book !!! Try to have a few hours to read the book in one sitting. The only criticism is that the title gives a very big clue to the story-line. This is the first book by Julia Crouch that I have read, but I will now be looking for her others, and hope they will be equally good.
“Not a classic, but an excellent read!”
(Paperback)
What a book! Heavy with suspense and tension, it kept me reading until the early hours of the morning and reaching for it on waking up on more than one occasion. The simple writing mirrors the ordered, straightforward world of Rose, but between and beneath the words simmers an unnerving undercurrent. Twists and turns of plot keep the reader constantly wanting to know what will happen next and, on more than one occasion, Crouch shocks and surprises us with the path the story takes.
That said, the characters are, on the whole, an unlikeable bunch – frustrated by Rose, you want to take her by the shoulders and shake her and the male characters all fall into a fairly typical stereotype. Cuckoo is unlikely to become a future ‘classic’ but is a highly recommended, totally entertaining read.
“Amazing debut, brilliant.”
(Paperback)
Julia Crouch's debut psychological thriller has it all!
The characterisations were superb. The plot was highly intelligent, very original and certainly held my interest throughout. I loved the style of writing and the way the storyline weaves into a normal, everyday family's lives at a time they are, on the surface, simply offering refuge to a friend and her children.
Brilliant, thoroughly enjoyable.
“splendid read”
(Paperback)
I loved this book its a very enjoyable suspense read. If you have read Cuckoo or thinking of reading Cuckoo, you would like Everything and Nothing by Araminta Hall, the novels are not the same but both a good suspense read.
“Gripping read”
(Paperback)
My first impressions was that it was going to be gripping from the start, and it definately was!!
As soon as I started reading the first page, I didn't want to put the book down as I was hooked!
The relationship between the two main characters is dark, and the secrets held between them could ruin rose's whole life. I don't want to give too much away though.
Overall the book is very engaging and recommend it to anyone who likes this type of book!
