Reviews: Cuckoo (24)
“A gripping read”
(Paperback)
by Penny Howard
I really enjoyed this book, and read it in just a few days. It kept drawing me back in. As other reviewers have mentioned it is easy to dislike the characters, but this adds to the tension and intrigue. At one point I wanted to shout at Rose and tell her to open her eyes, which her friend also does. The friendship between Rose and Polly can only be described as toxic but neither can see it, even after its too late! I would recommend this to friends as I enjoyed it and thought it was very well written.
“Surprising and thrilling”

Not the type of book I would necessarily usually go for...but surprisingly good! The story is structured really well, with suspense building at a steady pace, coming to a shocking climax. The characters are well developed and you actually become really involved with them. In fact, I read the last third of the book in one sitting as I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen! My one criticism is that it's not exactly a very original story...you can almost guess what the overall story is from the blurb on the back. If you've ever seen the film "The Hand that Rocks the Cradle" you pretty much know what the score is from the beginning...but it's a pretty thrilling ride nevertheless!

A very entertaining book that you wont stop reading. Not a ending you would expect.
“Could have been a brilliant book”

The cover and title drew me to this book, and I soon found I just could not put it down! It is very well written and I was quickly drawn into the increasingly dark and unsettling situation that Rose finds herself in. As the feeling of threat increases, I just had to find out what was going to happen, although it was difficutl to predict just how the plot was going to unravel, and indeed, at times, even to know who the vicitm would be. However, the ending was quite an anti-climax. It was all over very quickly and, for me, didn't reach a satisfactory resolution, in particular leaving some earlier incidents in the book unresolved. It is a shame that the author could not come up with a stronger ending for such an otherwise well written and compelling book.

I don’t know what I liked about this book but I really enjoyed it. It’s got a good beginning, brilliant ending but gets a bit bogged down in the middle. Without exception I disliked all of the main characters (including most of the children) and the unsavoury story (and even more unsavoury Polly) get under your skin. But somehow it all comes together. You can’t put it down and, when you do, you keep thinking about what is going to happen and how it is all going to end. I would thoroughly recommend Cuckoo but get strapped in for the ride.
