“Cosy fantasy to bring you all the giddy joy”
(Paperback)
If, like me, you are an avid Kingfisher fan you have likely read the Clocktaur War books (if you haven't, its fine! You will discover Edmund after he's grown some sense) and you saw that this book follows Learned Edmund and you did a little squee of joy because we are very much back in the World of the White Rat and I for one was absolutely thrilled.
Kingfisher's White Rat books are interesting because there are, technically, 3 different series set in the same world. These series can be read independently of one another (Her Paladin series, the Clocktaur Books, and Swordheart and Daggerbound) and they are so interesting because they mostly follow the characters, but all the while there is a subplot brewing between the stories and inter-connectedness that makes me giddy with joy every time a character crosses into a different series.
But, more about this one! We find Edmund frustrated with his church and so he has taken an opportunity to leave for a while and deliver a sword to a scholar in a different city. Through a series of unfortunate events he unleashes the sword....who has a name and devilishly charming personality and I love him.
If you're familiar with Kingfisher's Paladin series you likely know where this is heading and it's fine because it is wonderful and lovely and fun and also there's a 7 foot tall pill-bug.
Just go with it.
I loved everything about this book and I was thrilled to be back in Kingfisher's world. If you're new here may I suggest starting with Paladin's Grace and you'll never look back.
