“Degrees”
(Hardback)
by Jason Wain
I first spotted the work of Andy Gotts in an issue of 'Black and White Photography Magazine' that was lying in a box at my college. After reading the article, I decided I really wanted his book, 'Degrees'. Now that in itself is a surprise, as I normally haven't much care for celebrities, or actors, which are the focus of this book. However, there are two main factors that make this a splendid book, regardless of whether you care for film stars or not.The first is the anecdotes. Many of the photos in this book come accompanied with fascinating stories relating to the particular shoot, whether it be to do with Christopher Lee singing in the Savoy or the ducks in George Clooney's house. These stories are highly interesting and show how many of the actors are in fact very normal, kind people. The second factor that makes this book great is the photographs themselves. All black and white, and shot on film, Gotts has a unique way of bringing out aspects of people in portraits, and this book is filled with A Class portraiture that goes miles beyond the average shots of film stars simply smiling on the red carpet. All in all it is a worthwhile book, whether you are simply interested in the people or are an enthusiastic photographer yourself. In addition, some of the money is given to diabetes research meaning you are paying for a worthwhile cause.
