“Discontent!”

Witty and hilarious, loved it!
“An enjoyable book about a neurotic person”
(Paperback)
If you feel discombobulated by life, then this book is about you and for you. The story is about Marisa, a creative executive for an ad agency. I think she’s been in a job for about four years and has hated every single day. Rita, her coworker who unfortunately passes away, thinks that she’s actually suffering from anxiety, so she gets a prescription which she happily pops every single day, whether she feels anxious or not. Every single day she thinks of a reason not to go to work and, when she’s at work, what can she get away with not doing. To the point of getting her students to do her work for her unwittingly! She has a loose relationship with her neighbour Pablo and has just gotten in touch again with an old friend from university, Elena. These people, she feels, are her family because her mother lives in another town, even though she calls her every week at the same time, and she sees Pablo and Elena regularly.
The book is just basically about all the different ways that Marisa feels she can get away from not doing any work and her relationship with her coworkers. It’s not as funny as many people make it out to be, but there are quite a few humorous quotes in the book which I found to be funny, not eye-wateringly so though. It’s funny I found the book could’ve been written about me when I used to work. Like Marisa, I’d sometimes walk to work to contemplate my life, to enjoy the weather, and hope I can come up with a reason not to go in. Until one day, when Marisa actually has a serious accident, through no fault of her own. This means that she will get a handsome payout and not have to go to work ever again, which she absolutely loves.
The book is set over the period of one year and is quite an enjoyable read. It has been well written, even though the paragraphs are extremely long (four pages for one paragraph at one point)! But the book can be read in one day because it does flow quite seamlessly and you do want to know how she copes from day to day, at work, and with her social life generally.
