The London Underground has held a special place in my heart since my first trip, never equalled by the Paris Metro or any other that I have travelled on since. As a young student in 1984 travelling from Inverness to a job interview in the capital it was all so captivating and I can still recall seeing various dark tunnels and recessess as my train whisked past. I wondered then where these might lead to and now at last I know some of the answers! One particular gem for me in the book is the mention of the former London Necropolis station and why it was needed. This may seem strange by today's standards but when you think about it is actually quite a sensible solution, if a little lacking in decorum. For anyone who loves to know what lies beyond locked doors and has an interest in our industrial and often murky past, this is one of those 'must read' books. So buy a copy, put your walking shoes on and get out there to start your own exploring.
