Reviews: Doctor Faustus (2)
“Fantastic edition, better than Goethe”
(Paperback)
This is an excellent edition of a major Elizabethan comic-tragedy by Christopher Marlowe. Whereas Goethe's "play" is more of an attempt to use the minimalist dramatic form to spark a new kind of philosophical critique á la narrative poems such as Dante's Commedia, Marlowe's work is every inch a play, and I found myself mouthing, or reading out, much of the dialogue. It is very easy to follow, has memorable characters, and deploys slapstick humour in a way that perfectly balances the darker, more disturbing, aspects of the play. Definitely recommended for anyone wanting to read a version of "Faust".
“Do not order this play from Waterstones”
(Paperback)
Great play, however my pages came stuck together and I had to rip them apart making the top of some of my pages rip. Don't feel like this is acceptable. My brand new book looks old and the top ruined. Really disappointed and surprised of this. I use this book for English literature so it is critical that I have a good quality book to last a long time. Very disappointing.
