This was the first book I've read by the author, and it started with such promise. I LOVED how Rae was introduced to the reader, and the opening pages showing her trying to build up the courage to enter the club felt so relatable. I was really rooting for her, as well as finding myself cringing on her behalf, especially when she realised she was being watched. Her nervousness felt so authentic. But I loved how welcoming Mistress Daff and Harlow were. I also loved the anticipation of the meet-cute between Rae and Grant in the office, and it was so cringeworthily well-written. It quickly became apparent that Rae was a people pleaser, both in her personal and work life, so I could see how she had the perfect submissive energy. I loved how Rae teased Grant about his grumpy face at work, and the rule list was hilarious. That said, while I understood Grant's internal battle, I also felt for Rae every time he started something then pulled away. Grant was an interesting character (I refuse to use his Dom name, sorry), but I found his lack of office boundaries frustrating. He was clearly written as an experienced and responsible Dom, but his recklessness in the office felt unauthentic, especially when he literally owned the building where the club was! I have to say, I could empathise with Grant's exasperation when he first met Rae's colleagues. They were VERY needy. But Rae's method of managing them, and especially Dorothy's outlandish requests, was genius. That's why I found her ability to switch off her HR brain and indulge in so much intimacy inside the office unbelievable. They literally had a club underneath them! That in turn felt like a missed opportunity. There was so much description of the club, but barely any scenes set there, except for the opening one in the club. Generally, I liked the supporting characters. Rae's best friend, Sam, was interesting, and my heart ached for her when we discovered more about her childhood. Meanwhile, Lucas/Tank was a good friend and sounding board for Grant. I guessed the source of the leak pretty early on, as well as the twist, but I still wished there was more focus on the relationship between Grant and Rae outside of the office. Perhaps I'm a little jaded, but, given the title and the blurb, I was expecting this to be a lot spicier and a lot funnier than it was. I felt that things lost focus in the middle of the story, and I really had to push through the second half of the book.
