Reviews: Dragonborn (23)
“If you're looking for a fast-paced, dragon-filled read, it doesn't get much better than this!”
(Hardback)
Dragonborn follows Alex, a young girl who discovers she's actually a dragon and is whisked away to the island of Skralla. But tensions between dragons and humans are rising, an evil is returning and Alex has to master her powers or risk losing them forever.
This was so much fun! I know I would have been absolutely obsessed as a kid, and even reading it as an adult it had no business being this good.
It was such a creative spin on dragons, I’ve seen ‘dragon shifters’ before, but they often feel more like magicky humans. Here, they were definitely dragons! Ferocious and epic and dangerous. I also loved the variety of the 'dwimmers' (magic dragon powers), they made for such interesting character dynamics and intrigue!
The main protagonist Alex was the heart of this book, and I absolutely loved her growth. She's such a strong character but also incredibly relatable at the same time. I loved her friendships, and relationship with all of the mentor characters in the book. I actually really appreciated the mentor characters, they treated Alex like a peer and were so protective and wonderful! We have too many bad mentors in stories I want more of this!
The worldbuilding also had no right to be as vivid and immersive as it was. The combination of magic and human technology was so fun. And the plot was brilliant too! So many twists and turns that I absolutely did not see coming, and a lovely sprinkling of social commentary that may go over kids' head but will make this rewarding even for older readers.
So if you're looking for a fast paced, action packed, dragon-filled read, it doesn't get much better than this! I'll definitely be picking up the sequel and checking out the author's other books.

“An engaging Dragon adventure”
(Paperback)
I absolutely loved this book. It really captures a magical world, full of dragons and fairies and portals.
It follows the story of a young girl, who has been brought up as a human, but is actually a dragon.
She is discovered by an wise, old dragon and ends up going to dragon school, where other children help her to learn about their culture and what is expected from a dragon.
There are plenty of twists and turns and excitement, that keeps you guessing until the end. I really hope the series continues.
I would happily recommend this book! Go and get it
“One of my favourite reads of 2025 so far”

Non spoilery review ⬇️
I don’t know where to begin with this review and I feel my words will not do the justice it deserves.
I finished reading this book a couple of weeks a go and have only just now been able to collect my thoughts and feelings enough to write a coherent review.
I went into Dragonborn knowing very little plot wise and I think all readers should too.
A brilliant start to a new series with many twists and turns that makes it extra exciting and pulls at the heartstrings a few times.
It begins with Alex who is highly angry with life, having lost her dad a short time ago and trying to deal with her grief. She heads to the forest where she spent time with her father to let off some steam. But her scream is witnessed by a strange man who asks if she’s okay. Her mother finds her and bans her from the forest, her only place of sanctuary and her only real reminder of her dad.
Her mum supposedly working late Alex sneaks in to the forbidden forest. When she finally returns home the strange man is there claiming to have known who her father was and if she needs his help, she only has to call out his name: Oliphos.
Alex’s mother decides it’s too dangerous to stay and Alex storms off to the forest where flame comes out of her mouth instead of a scream. Alex summons Oliphos and discovers that she is a dragon and finds herself following Oliphos to the island of Skralla. A place where she will learn how to be a dragon and will learn that not all Dragons are on the good side.
As Alex struggles with her grief and what becoming a dragon really means for her, can she become the dragon that she is destined to be? Well you will have to read the book to find that out.
I loved the way that Struan Murray explored the themes of Grief and Death through the eyes of a young child.
Having lost my father at a young age I felt I could relate to Alex quite a lot. There were so many amazing quotes that I wanted to bottle up and keep forever.
“Absolutely brilliant!”
(Paperback)
Dragonborn is the first of what I hope will be a long series. Struan immerses us in a world where dragons, giants and fairies live alongside humans. There's lots of twists and turns, including a gasp outloud moment for me! So excited for the next book to see how the adventure continues.
“A Deeply Engaging Fiery Adventure”
(Hardback)
Who were you born to be?
Alex Evans isn’t sure. Ever since her dad’s death, she’s felt lonely and frustrated. Her mother’s strict rules and seemingly irrational fear of potential dangers keep Alex close to home and away from the forest she loved to explore with her father. When, finally, out of pure frustration, flames pour from her mouth, Alex doesn’t know what to think. Could she possibly be a dragon? And if she is, are there others?
Led by the wise Oliphos, Alex is taken to the legendary island of Skralla where she meets other dragon children (drakes) who are learning to control their dragon form and unlock the power of their birthright. She learns of Drak Midna – an evil dragon who threatens war against the human world. Alex is determined to find the precious Phylactery map before Drak Midna and use it to make contact with the spirit of her father. If there’s anyone who can guide her through this challenging time, it’s him. Majestic, beautiful and frightening, Alex longs to embrace her true self – if only she can let go and be free.
Meanwhile, Dr Archibald P. Puppinsworth ( or Pups as he is casually known), spends his days studying the most amazing mystical creatures. His notes to the reader interspersed with Alex’s story add a (somewhat eccentric) mortal perspective and valuable background information about the folklore surrounding the dragon children’s reality.
Dragonborn is a deeply engaging story of loss, growing up and discovering who you truly are. When that reality is a dragon, the tale becomes even more thrilling! Readers will be inspired to let go of their own fear and face the unknown with courage. The power of true friendship and dealing to big emotions will resonate long after the story is finished. Alex is a force to be reckoned with and I can’t wait to see her live her truth in the next book in this fantastic new series!
