Reviews: Feverfew (1)
“Feverfew by Anna Saunders”
(Paperback)
by Frank McMahon
Anna Saunders goes from strength to strength. Her latest volume, Feverfew took me in so many different directions with their imagery and power. The poems showcase the varied sources of her imagination and material: Greek Myths, family, grief, the natural world, love-sex-eroticism, oppression, violence, politics. In poem after poem, there are startling lines, like ...bladed angel drooping from the sky... ...how did he earn the spokes of the sun... ...glistening like broken berries... ...like an animal moulting musky fur.. ...their marriage has been a butcher's slab... I also found in these poems a great empathy for those who suffer violence, as if it is she who has experienced it. There is a moral power in poems like Rare, An Instrument, De Sade and a tenderness in other poems like Silk Robes, The Air. I have read them several times already and I know there is more to discover in further readings. I look forward to her next poetic offering.
